NABLUS, West Bank A member of Palestinian Leader Yasser Arafat's Fatah faction was killed Sunday in an explosion at a telephone booth, hospital sources said.

Palestinians blamed the Zionist regime for the death of 29-year-old Usama Fathi Jawabra, which comes just days after the Israeli Army was given the green light to resume "pinpoint attacks" on suspected combatants despite a cease-fire accord.

Jawabra was getting ready to place a call at the phone box in the West Bank town of Nablus when he was killed by the blast, which also lightly injured two passers-by according to witnesses.

He had previously been jailed for 15 months by the Palestinian Authority, according to Palestinian sources.

Fatah issued a statement blaming "fascist" Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon for the attack against "one of the heroes of the resistance" and called on the international community to "oppose the state terrorism of the Sharon government against our unarmed people."

Ahmed Qorei, head of the Palestinian Legislative Council, told reporters in Ramallah that the blast was "an organized crime carried out by Israel" and said Jawabra's death "does not help to restore calm."

Palestinian Cabinet Secretary Ahmed Abdelrahman accused Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who left Sunday for talks in the United States on the faltering truce accord with the Palestinians, of personally ordering the killing.

"Israeli security services who committed this crime were following Sharon's instructions," he said.

"Sharon doesn't want a cease-fire, he wants to continue aggressions against the Palestinians," he said.

Some 30 Palestinians were killed in Israeli "pinpoint attacks" against Palestinian militants which began in November, several weeks after the latest uprising against Israel began, according to Palestinian sources.

The last attack on a fatah official was on May 12, when 25-year-old Motassem Sabagh was killed by an Israeli helicopter gunship in the West Bank city of Jenin.

Also Sunday a Palestinian wounded by Israeli gunfire in clashes in the Gaza Strip two weeks ago died of his injuries, hospital sources told AFP.

Mohammad Walid Hamdan, 24, had been shot in the stomach on June 9 at Khan Younis in the south of the Gaza Strip.
